Construction of Exhibition Halls in Milan, Italy

The former premises of the oil refinery are now a large construction site for the Commercial and Congress Centre. The three airports and nearby highways will allow visitors to reach the Centre. The Commercial Centre includes architectural showpieces such as the "LOGO" facility with its innovative pavilion structures made of steel and glass (logo means symbol in Italian) situated at the main entrance to the exhibition halls and the "VELA" structure (which means sail in Italian) which connects the halls. The design by Massimiliano Fuskas, an Italian artist, was developed by MERO of Würzburg in cooperation with the Engineering Office Schleich Bergermann und Partner of Stuttgart. In 2004 Mostostal Chojnice S.A. manufactured 1345 tonnes of exhibition hall structures for this prestigious investment project.

The "LOGO" facility is 22 - 37 m wide and 119 m long. Its volcano-like structure towers above the new exhibition halls making them a true landmark. There is a flat roof zone on the halls at a height of 10 m. The roof covering with an area of approx. 4300 m2 consists of a mixture of glass and steel mounted directly on steel constructions. The "VELA" facility has a freely shaped roof curved in two axes and covering a linear axis running from east to west at a height of 16 m. The facility is 1300 m long and 32 - 41 m wide and connects individual exhibition halls. The roof, which consists of glass mounted on heavy bars (38,000 sections) and joints (16,500 sections), mainly rests on timber columns (183 sections) and is partly connected to the ground with so-called 'volcanoes' or is supported by the structures below. This gives a difference in levels of 26 m. Glass mounted directly on a steel structure with an area of 46,000 m2 emphasises its lightness of the construction and makes it seem to float over the other elements.
